The Youth Leader Intern will support the planning development, implementation and evaluation of activities and initiatives of youth led communication and engagement strategies. They promote and ensure youth voices are at the forefront of Compass’ decision making. The Youth Leader Intern will also sit at decision-making tables to inform Compass’ work. Youth Leader Interns should reflect the population they are serving and are eligible for fixed term contracts up to two (2) years.
DUTIES:
- Lead and chair the Youth Advisory Council including setting the agenda, developing reporting structures and monitoring performance
- Assist the Engagement Specialist with planning, developing, and implementing a youth engagement strategy including: coordinating and facilitating youth engagement events and activities, raising awareness of Compass and providing further opportunities for youth opinions to be heard
- Promotes positive professional relationships with internal staff, community partners and youth in the community
- Mentor and encourage Youth Advisory Council members and other participants
- Facilitate research efforts to gather information about barriers to services for youth
- Support the Agency’s communications team by growing the Compass and Sudbury Youth Wellness Hub brands in the community
- Attend community events to promote Compass and the Sudbury Youth Wellness Hub
- Leverage communications and Agency relationships to support strategy and achievement of goals and objectives
- Supports and contributes to the development of the Agency’s communication strategy
- Create communications and social media posts
- Develop and manage budgets for events and engagement activities
- Evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for enhancements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Compass is a special service organization serving a particular age group through this position. As such, the organization deems the ideal candidate will likely be a person over the age of 16 and under the age of 25 as a bona fide occupational requirement of this job.
- Knowledge and appreciation of issues facing our diverse populations (i.e. Anishnaabe cultures, francophone, immigrant/refugee, lgbt2sq, etc.)
- Basic knowledge or lived experience of the child welfare and children’s mental health and other social and health services
- Basic understanding of the spectrum of services available to youth and families in the community
- Dedicated to improving outcomes for youth
- Motivated self-starter and exhibit a willingness to take on new tasks and actively learn on the job
- Previous experience in a group facilitation and/or working with youth from various backgrounds is considered an asset
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and leadership skills
- Work in a computerized environment, knowledge of Excel and Word
- Maintain sensitive and confidential information
- Assess priorities, analyse and solve problems
- Demonstrate organisational skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Demonstrate the ability to develop a sound appreciation and knowledge of the agency’s functions and organizational structure
- Ability to work collaboratively with peers and colleagues
- Ability to work independently
- Demonstrated ability to make sound judgements
- Possess strong verbal and written communication, preferably in both official languages
- Satisfactory police vulnerable sector check required
